I've photographed every President and former President since Gerald Ford, except Bill Clinton, and Trump. I thought I had an opportunity to photograph Clinton at a 2012 fundraising event for a hospital foundation that my wife worked for and was planning the event. I sometimes did some event work for the foundation so it sounded like I might have my chance. Nope. I saw the contract. It specified that no press, hospital staff, or contract photogs were permitted to photograph while Clinton was present.
Glad you got the chance.
Thanks Bill, I got to photograph Clinton a number of times, including for several of the dreaded cattle call shoots for VIPs. You know, where they line up 50-75 donors, movers and shakers, etc. and then, one at a time, they get to go shake the celebrity's hand, make quick small talk and smile for the camera together. Did that three times with Clinton, three or four times with George Bush Senior as well as George Bush, the younger. So far I have "missed out" on the "opportunity" to photograph Trump. My engagement with Bush Jr. mostly came about because my next door neighbor when he was governor was Karen Hughes, his communications director. We had some fun mail box debates but we are always kind and respectful of each other. After all, Karen was also a swimmer... I did get one photo of Gerald Ford. Not at all set up. He was wading into a crowd of students after an outside speech in front of the UT Main Building. I was a student at the time. A student with a camera.

All three of the VIPs+celebrity line up shoots were nerve wracking but fun. All three former presidents involved were incredibly nice, patient, kind, etc. Regardless of party affiliation. The way it should be.

I photographed Gerald Ford when he was 90. He came down the center aisle at a trot, skipped the stairs and jumped up on the platform. He was still an athlete.

I photographed Queen Elizabeth II. Which in my world is much more exciting than any presidents lol. Did it on Kodachrome 64 no less.
