I bet you enjoyed all the interactions you had with the various people you photographed. They look relaxed and happy to have made your acquaintance. You might chalk it up to experience but no amount of "working at it" overcomes an internal bad vibe people pick up on. IMHO those that fail in portraiture do so mainly because internally they just aren't very happy in their own skin. I think we both know someone this analysis would fit ;). No amount of fancy gear makes up for it.
